Lorraine Levan Thanks for the picture! Wow, I have a case of nostalgia for my childhood in Woodbridge! I am able to identify five more of those pictured in the larger cast photo, possibly 6. Seated next to Pearl Burns is Joe Najavitz. The woman on the and in the print dress is Lee Ellentuck. In the second row, third over from Lee is Dr. Izzy Rabinowitz. I believe the man in the hat behind Elsie Plavin's shoulder is Ted Cohen. The man to his right (viewer's left) in the tie is Irv Goodstein. And, in the back row, next to Harry Kagan, isn't that Dr. Bernstein? And, in the vignettes, of course we can see Rose Belafsky.

Mr. Schlussler
I was showing my grades 11&12 class (Cong. B'nai Israel, Rumson, NJ) some clips from the movie "Gentlemen's Agreement" and trying to give some feel for the climate in the late 1940's. Suddenly I recalled something Mr. Schlussel had told our class in the mid-1950's. He said that we owed a great debt to African Americans (then politely called Negroes), because they were the largest and most visible minority and we were next. He believed that a lot of the misfortune that fell on them would otherwise land on us.
I remember Mr. Schlussel as a talented and enthusiastic teacher and a saintly man. I think he taught at Adath Israel for only a short time. Anybody else remember him?

From the Time Capsule
During the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Woodbridge Veterinary Group & Hospital on Monday, 7/28, a time capsule and a book of records found during construction was handed over to Sandy Goldberg, a past president who was there as a representative of the congregation. The book of records seemed to contain only the signatures of those attending the 40th anniversary dinner dance. The time capsule had a brief typewritten history of the congregation, some newspaper clippings and a photograph. The capsule was found when work was being done in the area of the rabbi's study. Apparently it was in the wall behind the cornerstone.

Time Capsule Found
As many of you know, the building that housed Adath Israel for many years was sold, and major renovations were done to convert the building for use by a veterinary practice. I just heard from my mother Miriam Winograd that during the construction work a time capsule was found and is going to be opened in a ceremony tomorrow, Monday, July 28, at 10:30 am.

From Hopelessly Nostalgic
Would you you consider coming to an Adath Israel reunion in 2009? I'm willing to organize it (never having done one before) - maybe "down the shore" for a weekend in the spring or fall. If you're at all interested, leave a comment here or send me an email at sharoncpw@gmail.com
